Richard Dyer's Theory - MoodBoard - Miss L

Does the promotional material construct an image rather than reveal a real person whereby you know about their likes and dislikes, family, background, education and problems?

Curtis Jackson also known as 50cent is owned by a major record label Shady Records & Aftermath which consists of the genre music, Hip Hop / Rap. 50cent started as a rapper by bringing his own style tot the music industry, with his first album “Get Rich Or Die Tryin”. The promotional material constructs an icon rather than reveal the real person, however through some of the lifestyle that he lives such as he created he has his own movie and in the movie poster we see 50cent with his back turned to the audience and he is holding a baby, the audience do not know if that is his baby or not but they would it is assume it is because the movie is about his life. This could be 50cent reaching out to his target audience to know about his life. According to Richard Dyer’s theory the artist depend on subsidiary media to create an image for them which can be marketed at their target audience, furthermore his theory says that you can buy into the artist as you can buy the artists songs, then you can watch their interviews and goes to their concerts and you complete the full cycle of being a true fan but you can still do not know them personally, this is why there is a ongoing cycle because this what keeps the audience interested because the artist reinvents them self so that they can always reach to a wider target audience. Also the start image is incomplete and is based on paradoxes which help to keep the target audience engaged and makes the audience want to know more about the star. 50cent uses different ways of promoting himself and his lifestyle such as having interviews, YouTube and being shown on TV on a regular basis. 50cent is shown wearing his own clothing G-unit clothing which again is him trying to promote his own independent style.

Goodwin's Theory - Album Covers - Miss L

Genre Characteristics
Chris Brown has his ear pierced and a tattoo on his hand; this is what you would expect to see in an RnB artist so they have the look which makes them look appealable to the audience to help promote them. Also in the album cover it is black and white edited expect himself this makes him stand out more in the picture. Also the writing and is red this tells us that there is a connection between the colour red and the artist which makes it stick out to the audience.

Intertexual Reference
In this album cover there is no intertexual reference, this is because this album cover was taken and turned into posters for fans to help promote the album and help make the artist make more money; this is the artist promoting himself through himself and different ways

Notion of looking
In this album the artist is not looking straight at the camera which means he is not directly looking at the audience or you individually. This album cover he is looking away in the right hand corner, although he is not looking at us it still makes us wonder what he is looking at and why he is looking that way

Voyeuristic Treatment
In this album Chris Brown is slightly leaning to the left and is looking over his shoulder it makes the audience what has caught his attention from that direction.  The audience will spot this because the picture is black and white he is in red, which makes look bright because he is more important because the background is in back and white

Chris Brown - F.A.M.E

Genre Characteristics
Chris Browns F.A.M.E is conventional to the RnB genre, the characteristics in this album cover are vital because they help identify the genre and who the artist is targeting as an audience. Chris Brown is wearing a baseball caps this shows the artist and the target audience that he likes baseball caps. Also at the top, the first four pictures going across have. Forgiving.All. My.Enemies, this could be anagram to his album called F.A.M.E. In addition the bottom right corner has a parental advisory, which means it contains explicit lyrics, which is mostly used it hip hop.

Motifs
Chris Brown’s motif is the little style of graffiti writing  in the left hand corner throughout all his albums he has all of those, this is because this because record labels will the most possible promotion for their solo artist. This is why Chris Brown mostly has close ups and mid shots for his album covers. Also F.A.M.E has to be classed as one of his recent motifs as he has a tattoo of it and it all over the internet and also is getting more promotion for it.

Intertextual Reference
Although F.A.M.E is the name of his album cover it is also a tattoo he got before he made he decided to call his album F.AM.E.

Notion of Looking

In the album cover, Chris brown is looking directly at the audience and it feels as if there is a connection between the artist and the customer, it is important that an artist establishes a connection with the customer  because it will influence his fans to buy the album

Need for close up
This is Chris browns seconds album and the use of a close up helps to establish a connection with new fans because it makes the album look more appealing with the use of bright colours, and a close up helps encourage buy the album because it feels as if the artist is directly looking at them. Also the audience will be able to identify the artist quicker

Rihanna - Loud

Genre Characteristics
The red represents the lust and love of her new album cover and what she has red all over it this could represent the fact that the colour red is loud or that her music should be played out loud. Furthermore her colour red has been heightened to make it look bright so that it sticks out to the audience, because you first look at the album cover is you notice the red lipstick and this looks appealing to girls because it looks flirtatious and girls want to be her and this appeals to males because it makes her looks sexy and men want her.

Notion of looking
Although she has her eyes closed she looks productively and sexually with the red lipstick this makes her sexual. Also because the colour is bright red and because they stick out your eyes are drawn to look at her lips and this makes her look sexual and memorizing

Motif
In this album Rihanna has no motif in this album this is because it was made into merchandise such as t-shirts and posters from promotional use, this was so that Rihanna could reach out to a wider audience such as new fans and a new target audience. This helps her to become more recognisable to the her target audience

Intertexual Reference
There is no intertextual reference within the album, although her album cover is been used for promotional uses and sold as t-shirts

Voyeuristic Treatment
Although we cannot see any part of her body she uses her hair and lips as a sign of voyeuristic treatment, in the picture she slightly pouts her lips and makes it stick out the audience and with the colour red used makes it look bright and more appealable with the combination of her hair to make her lips and hair looks more arousing to the opposite sex. Rihanna does not do this in her first album because she wants to attract a new audience and widen her variety this was because she reinvented herself. Also through a close up it helps to establish a connect between the artist and the consumer

Rihanna - Music of The Sun

Interetexual Reference
In this album there is no interetexual reference as this is her first album and she was not really known around the world

Motifs
In this album Rihanna has no motifs because it is her first album and all Rihanna would like do is make money and be recognized

Notion of looking
Rihanna is looking right at the camera which makes us this she is looking at us and that there is a connection between the buyer and the artist.

Genre Characteristics
She has pink lipstick on which makes her look glamorous and makes us look at her lips and think she is sexy. She also has a gold coat on which makes her rich this is because she wants to look glamorous and spectacular. Rihanna’s eyebrows have been done to make her look sexy.
