Goodwin's Theory - Music Videos - Mrs F

Wiz Khalifa – Roll Up

Genre Characteristics

Mid shot of a the character dressed in a baseball cap, a print t-shirt, diamond earrings, gold chains, ray bans, tattoo’s all over and a baseball jacket.

The female character is wearing short cut denim shorts, big gold hoop earrings and a low cut t-shirt which reveals her curves

Lots of close ups used on the main singer to show that he is a solo artist, also promotes the singer and increases their identity to the audience

Relationship between lyrics and visuals

The lyrics are related to what the artist is saying about the things he would do for her this is typical in an RnB video because the artist wants to flash about the amount of money he has and will spend on her

Furthermore there is a link between the beat and uses his beat to go along with the song as the artist goes along with it

Relationship between Music and Visuals

When the tempo is fast during the chorus the camera has faster edits as the camera rolls as you see different images of the artist

When the artist is singing the main verses the tempo slows down the narrative and you can see what the artist is talking about and how he is trying to get the girl in the music video

Also when the artist sings the chorus “roll up” the camera roles up, this shows us the indication that he is going along with the beat and the edit

Motifs which reoccur

in the background on the wall it says Taylor Gang, that he his trying to promote his gang and his clothing which is Taylor Gang

Frequently reference to motion of looking

Throughout the video the artist has close ups and he is looking at the camera and he makes a connection with the audience this because he wants them to feel involved

Intertextual Reference

This is jacket that the artist set up as a clothing line called “Taylor Gang” this helps promote the artist and helps him to get more recognised through the fans.

Primary performance based / narrative based / concept based

It is narrative based because we go through a story with the artist as he meets a girl and tells her he can buy her everything, this is what you would expect to see in a RnB video because they are trying to show off their money to the most attractive girl and trying to show her that he can give her everything with the money he earning

Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

Genre Characteristics

The band are wearing slim fit suits and 2 member are in skinny jeans this fits the looks of a indie rock band because this is the look they are trying to portray to their fans

They are is a long shot of them playing their instruments this because they want to be shown that they can play their instrument s because as a rock it is the ideal look that you play the instruments and that the audience can see them playing

Also where they are performing is stage this shows that there is enough space for them all to perform to the audience; they are all dressed similar this is to show that they are a band

Relationship between lyrics and visuals

There is no direct link between the lyrics and visuals; this is because they do not need to because they already have a large majority of fans

As they are band it would be hard to match the visuals with the lyrics because being a rock/ indie band is about showing the audience that you can perform their instruments

Furthermore they are speaking about a heart break as they refer to the lines “I’m the one with the broken heart” but they are performing on a stage

Relationship between Music and Visuals

There is no direct link between the music and visuals however the indie band go along with the tempo of the beat as they sing

Motifs that recur

There are no motifs in this music video, however they use lots of close ups for promotional use because they are not that well known so through the use of close ups they can have promotional offers such as posters which will help to make them be more known through their target audience

Frequently reference to motion of looking

The band do look at the camera when there are uses of close up this is for that they can use for promotional use which can be sold to their target audience

Because they are directly looking at the camera it feels as though they are looking at you and that there is a connection between the band and you and that you can relate to the song

Intertextual Reference

There is no intertexual reference within the video

Performance based / Narrative Based / Concept Based

The video is performance based because we see the band perform on stage showing us that they can play instruments and that the stage indicates that they are playing live to us as an audience. This is because in some of the close ups they look directly at the camera
